So here I am at school, in my senior year of college. My schedule isn't too demanding and I have a whole lot of free time.

However, with free time and with entering the real world in a few months, people want to go out and celebrate the last ounces of true freedom prior to retirement. Yes, going to bars is a blast, but it costs a lot of money that I don't have.

So I applied for a job; my old job I had two years ago. At Carmax.

This time, I was applying at a smaller store in Connecticut compared to the behemoth I worked at in Maryland. I am able to do about ~25hrs a week including weekends. All primarily busy night hours, when they want part-timers.

Anywho, I submitted my application - a reference being my old manager at Carmax, who was hoping I'd stay before going back to school. I constantly ranked amongst the top in terms of sales at the Maryland location, and I actually had the highest customer satisfaction rating out of all 30+ salespeople at the MD Store.

Not to toot my own horn, or sound cocky, but I have a very impressive résumé as well.

To be honest, I was expecting this to be a slam-dunk. Based off of being an ex-employee who left on good terms that did rather well, it seemed getting hired wouldn't be too difficult.

About an hour after submitting the ap, I get straight up denied. Not anything hinting at a possibility once space opens up, but a complete rejection.

Would it be wise for me to call HR there and ask exactly why I was rejected, or is that unprofessional? If they can't take me at that location, I wouldn't mind commuting to one slightly further.

Thanks

That may have been pretty boring. Here's an Rollscalade-Royce for listening.

I would call to find out why. The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I worked for t-mobile call center for 4 years quit there and applied for Verizon call center and was accepted but advised due to an agreement with t-mobile I would have to wait 6 months before I could be hired. I ended up joining the Army and when I got out I applied for Verizon again thinking it was a sure thing and was flat out denied. I haven't called HR since I found another job but I am curious to find out why.

It's not like you have anything to lose by calling them since you've already been denied. Maybe it was a machine that sorted through your info and excluded you based on some piece of info you provided.

I think it's okay to call back, it's just about how you word it. More of a "what skills/assets should I look to improve on" versus a "#wtfbro".

As someone that has gotten rejected a lot (for jobs) I think you should ask and follow up if they give a straight answer. I'm curious.

That's what I was thinking. However, here's a part of the puzzle I left out.

Upon graduation, I am interested in a job at a corporate level. I don't want to tarnish my reputation based off of something that occurred while I was looking for part-time work.

Definitely call back. I've heard stories at work where people who have been rejected call to see why, then apply a few months later and are hired. It shows you are professional and committed.

Carmax, like most fortune-500 employers tell you to apply online when you go there in-person. I would know - I told way too many people to do that when I worked there.

I'd say call someone at the store directly that you applied to, since you could have been computer rejected, or call the manager you used to work for and see if he has any connections. It doesn't make any sense to me that you'd be rejected for a position you seem over qualified for. Though I'm going through something similar trying to get a part time job one a dealership in the area but can't get a dang response out of the GM.

Speaking as someone with a fair amount of HR experience, you're not going to get very far calling and asking for a reason they didn't hire you. Most big corporations don't give that kind of feedback to candidates because they don't want to give you a reason to sue them for not hiring you.
